Data in Sports.

Introduction to Data in Sports Sport in today’s world has extended beyond just the playing field. What was earlier two teams entering the field with textbook strategies, has today boomed into a platform with detailed analysis and pin-pointing to every detail. An athlete or a team’s data can show us where their strengths and weaknesses lie. It tells us a player’s performance probability based on past results: How many runs has Virat Kohli scored in the death overs of knockout games? How many penalties has Neymar missed during Champions League Games? …and so on Studying data helps teams prepare for the unexpected. Any change that the opposition makes before or during the game can be instantly studied by a team of analysts to see how it will impact the rest of the game. For example: in an ODI game between India and Australia at Adelaide, the team batting order shows that Tendulkar was moved from #3 to #5. Australia can then look at data to understand Tendulkar...

Importance of the yo-yo test?

IS YO-YO TEST REALLY NEEDED FOR CRICKET? It was the Indian home series against Australia in 2017 when BCCI announced that from now on every player has to pass the yo-yo test if he has to book his spot in the Indian team. So, now form is not the only factor which will determine if a player will be selected for the next campaign. First, let’s get introduced to the yo-yo test. The yo-yo test was developed in New Zealand to measure the recovery time needed for athletes after different levels of workout. So, there are 3 points around which this test goes around. The first point is the starting point and the 2 nd point is placed 20m away from the 1 st point. The 3 rd point is placed behind the 1 st point in the opposite direction of the 3 rd point. So in the test the athlete has to start from point 1 at the sound of a beep and then reach the 2 nd point before the sound of another beep. Then another beep means that the athlete has to return back to the point 1. The next beep me...

Alastair Cook

Alastair Cook – The consistent player from England England batsman Alastair Cook’s 12-year Test career has come to an end. He finished, not only as England’s highest run-getter but also as the fifth-highest run-scorer in the format. The 33-year-old who has called time off his career after playing 161 Tests, has so far scored 12,472 runs at an average of 45.35 with 33 hundreds and 57 half centuries. Nothing describes Cook’s ability to score runs better than his high scores in Test cricket. He has more Test centuries than any other English batsman to have ever played the game. More than the number of centuries, what’s more impressive is his hunger for big runs even after scoring a hundred. England’s batting coach – Graham Gooch – insisted on his batsmen to score many hundreds and not just be content with a few centuries. Cook is the player who learnt those lessons to perfection and has 7 scores of 150 including 2 double centuries. While his highest score of 294 against Ind...

GENDER PAY GAP IN SPORTS Sports are an important aspect in the society wherein a lot of reservations or boundaries in terms of religion, caste, creed, etc become obvious. But, in the recent times, with increasing professionalism, one factor that has taken centre stage is that of discrimination in terms of financial support to the women in sports. A lot of people have been a part of the discussions regarding gender equality in sports and how women should be encouraged to participate. This issue has been discussed largely, not only in India but all across the world.  Woman from all across the globe have been a part of the world of sports for a long time but in India the scenario is quite different, where people have just started to accept that sports can be a legitimate career option for girls or women too and have finally started encouraging the participation of women in all kinds of sports. In order to achieve this, we need to first ensure that there is equal partic...
